Finding the Odd Shape Out

<p>In odd-one-out questions, you are shown a group of shapes (usually five) and must find the one that does not belong. The other four share a common feature that the odd one lacks. These questions test your ability to analyse visual properties carefully.</p>

<li><strong>Curved vs straight:</strong> Are four shapes made of curves and one has straight lines?</li>

<li>List the properties of each shape (shape, shading, size, number of sides, etc.)</li>

<li>Find the property that four shapes share and one does not</li>

<p>Five shapes: circle, triangle, square, hexagon, pentagon.</p>

<p>The circle is the odd one out. Why? All the others are polygons (shapes with straight sides). The circle has no straight sides — it is curved.</p>

<p>Five shapes: black triangle, black square, grey circle, black pentagon, black hexagon.</p>

<p>The grey circle is the odd one out. All the others are black; this one is grey. (You might also notice it is the only circle, but the shading difference is the most consistent distinguishing feature.)</p>

<h2>Worked Example 3: Subtle Difference</h2>

<p>Five arrows all pointing in different directions: up-right, up-left, down-right, down-left, and up. Four arrows point diagonally; one points straight up. The straight-up arrow is the odd one out.</p>

<h2>Worked Example 4: Internal Features</h2>

<p>Five squares, each containing a small shape: dot, dot, dot, cross, dot. The square with the cross is the odd one out — the others all contain dots.</p>

<h2>When Two Answers Seem Possible</h2>

<p>Sometimes you might find two possible odd ones out. In this case, choose the one where the rule is simplest and most obvious. The exam is looking for the clearest, most logical distinction.</p>

<p>For example, if four shapes are large and one is small, AND four shapes are triangles and one is a square — the question probably intends the square (shape type is a more fundamental difference than size).</p>

<h2>Complex Odd-One-Out Questions</h2>

<p>In harder questions, each shape might be a combination of elements (a shape inside a shape, or a shape with lines through it). Break the figure into its components and compare each component separately.</p>

<li>Go through the checklist for EVERY question — this prevents you from missing subtle differences</li>

<li>Practise regularly — your eye will get faster at spotting the difference</li>
