Unseen Poetry — A Method

GCSE English Literature · Poetry

Don't panic — you already have the skills

You analyse an unseen poem the same way as set texts: ideas + methods + effect. No context needed.

A reliable approach

1. Subject – what is the poem about? (read it twice)

2. Tone / mood – how does it feel, and does it shift?

3. Language – pick 2–3 powerful words/images; explore connotations.

4. Structure & form – stanzas, rhyme, rhythm, line length, enjambment, repetition.

5. Message – what is the poet ultimately saying?

Writing it up

Open with a one-sentence overview of the poem's meaning, then explore method by method, always linking to the effect on the reader.

The comparison question (second unseen poem)

Compare methods:

> "Both poets use natural imagery, but whereas Poem A uses it to convey peace, Poem B uses it to suggest threat…"

Exam tip

You don't need context for unseen poetry — focus on language, structure and your personal interpretation. Quote briefly and analyse precisely; an overview at the start steadies your whole answer.
