Writing Exam: 90-Word and 150-Word Tasks
The AQA GCSE German writing paper is worth 25% of your total grade. You must produce two written responses and a translation. Strong planning, tense variety, and accurate grammar are the keys to high marks.
Paper Structure

The 90-Word Task
You receive four bullet points to cover. Each bullet point should receive roughly equal treatment (about 20-25 words each). You MUST address all four bullets.
How to Structure It
Each bullet point should include:
- At least 2-3 sentences
- An opinion or reason where possible
- Aim for different tenses across the four bullets
Example Task: "Write about your free time"
Bullet points: what you do, who with, what you did last weekend, future plans.
Bullet 1 (present): In meiner Freizeit spiele ich gern Fußball, weil es Spaß macht. Ich höre auch gern Musik, besonders Popmusik.
Bullet 2 (present): Normalerweise treffe ich mich mit meinen Freunden im Park. Wir spielen zusammen Fußball oder gehen ins Kino.
Bullet 3 (past): Letztes Wochenende bin ich mit meiner Familie ins Kino gegangen. Wir haben einen lustigen Film gesehen und danach haben wir Pizza gegessen.
Bullet 4 (future): Nächstes Wochenende werde ich meine Großeltern besuchen. Ich möchte auch schwimmen gehen, wenn das Wetter schön ist.
Marking Criteria (90-word task)

The 150-Word Task (Higher)
This is where you can really shine. You receive two bullet points as guidance, but you have more freedom to develop your ideas. This task is worth 32 marks — the single highest-value question on the paper.

How to Score Top Marks
1. Use at least three tenses:
- Past (Perfekt or Imperfekt): Letztes Jahr habe ich ein Praktikum gemacht.
- Present: Ich arbeite jetzt samstags in einem Geschäft.
- Future: In der Zukunft werde ich an der Uni studieren.
- Conditional (bonus): Wenn ich könnte, würde ich im Ausland arbeiten.
2. Include opinions with justifications:
- Ich finde es toll, weil...
- Meiner Meinung nach ist es wichtig, dass...
- Ich bin der Meinung, dass...
- Es wäre besser, wenn...
- Das Beste daran ist, dass...
3. Use complex structures:
- weil/dass/wenn/obwohl + verb at end
- um... zu + infinitive (in order to)
- Relative clauses: ein Beruf, der gut bezahlt ist
- Passive voice (bonus): Deutsch wird in vielen Ländern gesprochen.
- Comparatives: Mathe ist interessanter als Geschichte.
- Inversion after time phrases: Normalerweise stehe ich um sieben Uhr auf.
4. Vary your sentence openings:
Don't start every sentence with "Ich". Use:
- Time phrases: Letztes Jahr..., Normalerweise..., In der Zukunft..., Jeden Tag...
- Opinions: Meiner Meinung nach..., Ich glaube, dass...
- Conjunctions: Obwohl es schwierig ist,..., Wenn ich älter bin,...
- Man sollte..., Es ist wichtig,...
5. Include linking words (Verbindungswörter):

Example 150-Word Task: "Die Umwelt"
Meiner Meinung nach ist der Klimawandel das größte Problem unserer Zeit. Die Luftverschmutzung in Großstädten wird immer schlimmer und viele Tierarten sind vom Aussterben bedroht.
Zu Hause versuche ich, umweltfreundlich zu leben. Ich trenne den Müll, spare Wasser und fahre mit dem Rad zur Schule, anstatt mit dem Auto zu fahren. Außerdem esse ich weniger Fleisch, weil die Fleischindustrie viel CO2 produziert.
Letztes Jahr habe ich an einem Umweltprojekt in der Schule teilgenommen. Wir haben Bäume gepflanzt und Müll im Park gesammelt. Das hat mir gezeigt, dass jeder einen Unterschied machen kann.
In der Zukunft werde ich versuchen, noch umweltfreundlicher zu leben. Wenn ich älter bin, möchte ich ein Elektroauto kaufen. Ich glaube, dass die Regierung mehr für erneuerbare Energien tun sollte, damit die nächste Generation eine saubere Welt hat.

Translation (English → German)
The translation section tests accuracy across grammar and vocabulary.
Tips for Translation
- Read the whole passage in English first before starting.
- Translate sentence by sentence, not word by word.
- Check every verb: Is the tense correct? Is the ending right? Is it in the right position?
- Check every noun: Correct gender? Correct case after prepositions?
- Watch for tricky structures:
- "I like playing" = Ich spiele gern (NOT Ich mag spielen)
- "I have been learning for..." = Ich lerne seit... (present tense + seit)
- "There is/are" = Es gibt + accusative
- "I enjoy myself" = Ich amüsiere mich (reflexive)
- Don't forget capital letters on all German nouns.

Final Checklist Before Submitting
- Have I addressed all bullet points?
- Have I used at least 3 tenses (150-word) or 2 tenses (90-word)?
- Are my verb endings correct?
- Is my word order right (V2 rule, subordinate clause verbs at end)?
- Have I capitalised all nouns?
- Have I used the correct cases after prepositions?
- Have I included opinions with reasons?
- Is my writing the right length (not too short, not excessively long)?
