Physics at GCSE is built on a relatively small number of ideas that reappear constantly — energy, forces, waves, electricity and the particle model. Once you can see that a question about a kettle, a car braking and a falling ball are all energy transfer questions, the subject gets considerably smaller.

Three things carry most of the marks. Equations, which you must be able to select as well as recall — knowing twenty formulae is no help if you cannot tell which one a question wants. Units, where careless conversion between millimetres and metres or minutes and seconds loses marks that were otherwise earned. And required practicals, which are examined directly and are worth revising as method, variables and sources of error rather than as results.

Six-mark questions are marked on structure, not volume. A clear line of reasoning that connects cause to effect scores; a list of everything you know about the topic does not.
