Types of Long-Term Memory
Research has shown that long-term memory (LTM) is not a single store — it consists of at least three distinct types. Tulving (1985) proposed this distinction based on the kind of information stored.
The Three Types of LTM

Episodic Memory in Detail
- Stores autobiographical events — things that happened to you personally
- Includes the context: when it happened, where you were, who was there, how you felt
- Must be consciously recalled — you actively think back to the event
- Memories can be unreliable — they may be distorted over time or by suggestion
- Example: remembering what you had for dinner last night
Semantic Memory in Detail
- Stores general knowledge and facts — not tied to personal experience
- Includes concepts, language, rules and categories
- Does not require you to remember when or where you learned the information
- Less vulnerable to forgetting than episodic memory — facts tend to be more stable
- Example: knowing that Paris is in France (you may not remember when you learned this)
Procedural Memory in Detail
- Stores motor skills and learned procedures — actions you perform without thinking
- Implicit (unconscious) — you do not need to deliberately recall how to do it
- Very resistant to forgetting — once learned, skills are rarely lost ("it's like riding a bike")
- Difficult to explain verbally — try describing exactly how you tie your shoes
- Example: playing a musical instrument, driving a car
Evidence for Different Types of LTM
Case study of Clive Wearing:
- Clive suffered brain damage from a viral infection (herpes encephalitis) that destroyed parts of his hippocampus
- He lost his episodic memory — he cannot remember events from his past or form new episodic memories
- His procedural memory is intact — he can still play the piano expertly
- Some semantic memory is preserved — he knows facts and can speak fluently
- This shows that the three types of LTM are stored in different brain areas and can be independently damaged
Brain scan studies:
- Episodic memory is associated with the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex
- Semantic memory is associated with the temporal lobe
- Procedural memory is associated with the cerebellum and basal ganglia
- Different brain areas being active for different memory types supports them being separate systems
Strengths of the Types of LTM Model
- Clinical evidence — case studies like Clive Wearing show that one type of LTM can be damaged while others remain intact
- Brain scan support — neuroimaging shows different brain regions are active for each type
- Practical applications — understanding procedural memory helps in rehabilitation (patients who cannot form new episodic memories can still learn new skills)
- Improves on the MSM — provides a more detailed and accurate picture of LTM than treating it as a single store
Weaknesses
- Case studies — single cases (like Clive Wearing) may not be generalisable to the whole population
- Overlapping types — the distinction between episodic and semantic memory is not always clear (e.g. remembering a fact might trigger a personal memory of learning it)
- Reductionist — there may be even more types of LTM that have not yet been identified
