Sensation vs Perception and Visual Illusions
Perception is a key topic in AQA GCSE Psychology. It examines how we interpret sensory information and why our perception can sometimes be inaccurate.
Sensation vs Perception

- Sensation is what your eyes detect; perception is what your brain interprets
- Example: Your eyes detect a pattern of light and colour (sensation); your brain interprets it as "a red apple" (perception)
Visual Illusions
Visual illusions occur when our perception of an image does not match reality. They reveal how the brain actively interprets visual information, sometimes incorrectly.
Key Visual Illusions

Why Do Visual Illusions Occur?
Gregory's Constructivist Theory (Top-Down Processing)
- Richard Gregory argued that perception is an active, constructive process
- The brain uses prior knowledge, expectations and context to interpret visual information — it makes inferences (educated guesses)
- Visual illusions occur when the brain's inferences are wrong — it misapplies rules that usually work in the real world
- Example (Muller-Lyer): outward-pointing arrows resemble the outside corner of a building (closer, therefore smaller); inward-pointing arrows resemble an inside corner (further away, therefore larger). The brain applies size constancy scaling — incorrectly
Gibson's Direct Theory (Bottom-Up Processing)
- James Gibson argued that perception is direct — we do not need prior knowledge; all the information we need is in the stimulus itself
- The visual environment provides rich information (texture gradients, motion parallax, optic flow) that directly specifies objects and distances
- Illusions occur because they are artificial, 2D images that remove the real-world information Gibson says we rely on

Exam Tips
- Know at least three named visual illusions and be able to describe each
- Understand the difference between sensation and perception — this is a common short-answer question
- Be able to explain the Muller-Lyer illusion using Gregory's theory (top-down processing)
