The 11+ maths paper assumes the Key Stage 2 curriculum but asks questions in less familiar ways, often wrapping several steps into one problem. Children who are confident in class can still struggle here, because the difficulty is in interpreting the question rather than in the arithmetic.
Speed matters. Fluency with times tables, number bonds and fraction–decimal– percentage equivalents frees up thinking time for the harder problems, and children who have to calculate these from scratch tend to run out of time regardless of ability.
Word problems are where most marks are lost. The useful habit is to read the question twice, identify precisely what is being asked before starting, and check that the answer is sensible in context.
