Speaking Exam Preparation
The AQA GCSE French speaking exam has three parts: Role Play, Photo Card, and General Conversation. It is worth 25% of your total grade.
Part 1: Role Play (approx. 2 minutes)
You receive a card with a scenario and 5 tasks (bullet points). You have the card in preparation time.
Tips
- Each bullet point = one response. Keep answers short and accurate.
- ! means you must ask a question.
- ? means you will be asked something unpredictable — listen carefully.
- Practise common scenarios: booking a hotel, buying tickets, at a restaurant, at the doctor's, asking for directions.
Example tasks and responses:

Key Language for Role Plays
- Je voudrais... — I would like...
- Est-ce qu'il y a...? — Is there...?
- C'est combien? — How much is it?
- À quelle heure...? — At what time...?
- Où se trouve...? — Where is...?
- Est-ce que je peux...? — Can I...?
Part 2: Photo Card (approx. 2 minutes)
You describe a photo, answer two specific questions about it, then answer an unpredictable question on the same theme.
Structure Your Description
1. Who: Il y a un garçon / une fille / des personnes...
2. Where: Ils sont dans un parc / à la plage / dans une salle de classe...
3. What: Ils jouent / mangent / parlent / sourient...
4. When: Il fait beau, donc c'est probablement l'été...
5. Opinion: Ils ont l'air contents / fatigués. À mon avis, c'est une scène agréable.
Example:
- Sur la photo, je vois deux jeunes qui font du vélo dans un parc. Il fait beau et ils ont l'air contents. Je pense que c'est le weekend parce qu'ils ne portent pas d'uniforme.
Handling the Unpredictable Question
- If you don't understand, ask: Pouvez-vous répéter, s'il vous plaît?
- Give an opinion + reason: Je pense que... parce que...
- Use a time frame: D'habitude, je... / L'année dernière, j'ai... / À l'avenir, je vais...
Part 3: General Conversation (3–5 minutes Foundation, 5–7 minutes Higher)
You choose one theme; the teacher chooses the other. The two AQA themes are:
1. Theme 1: People and lifestyle
2. Theme 2: Popular culture
3. Theme 3: Communication and the world around us
How to Give Strong Answers
Use the OFRT technique for each answer:
- Opinion: Je pense que / À mon avis / Ce qui me plaît, c'est...
- Fact/Detail: a concrete example or description
- Reason: parce que / car / puisque
- Time frame: past, present, or future reference
Example question: Qu'est-ce que tu fais pendant ton temps libre?
Strong answer: "Normalement, je joue au foot le samedi avec mes amis (present) parce que c'est un bon moyen de rester en forme (reason). Le weekend dernier, on a gagné notre match (past) et c'était génial. L'été prochain, je voudrais essayer le tennis (future/conditional) car ça m'intéresse."
General Speaking Tips
- Speak clearly — pronunciation matters. Practise the French r, nasal vowels, and silent final consonants.
- Don't rush — it's better to speak slowly and accurately than to gabble.
- Self-correct — if you make a mistake and notice it, fix it. Examiners reward this.
- Extend your answers — never give one-word responses. Aim for 3–4 sentences per question in conversation.
- Use fillers naturally: alors (so), euh (um), en fait (in fact), voyons (let's see) — these buy you thinking time.
- Vary your tenses — the mark scheme explicitly rewards this. Try to include past, present, and future in your conversation.
- Preparation time (12 minutes before the exam): plan role play answers, describe the photo, and note key vocab for your chosen theme.
