Key Geographical Concepts
GCSE Geography requires you to understand several overarching concepts that connect physical and human geography:
Place
- Every location has a unique combination of physical and human characteristics
- Sense of place — how people perceive and feel about a place (influenced by personal experience, media, culture)
- Places change over time due to natural processes (erosion, deposition, climate change) and human actions (urbanisation, development, conflict)
Space
- The distribution of features across the Earth's surface
- Spatial patterns — where things are located and why (e.g. why earthquakes cluster at plate boundaries; why cities develop at bridging points)
- Distance and accessibility — how far apart things are and how easily they can be reached affects development, trade, and daily life
Scale
- Geographical processes operate at different scales — local, regional, national, global
- A decision at one scale can have consequences at another (e.g. deforestation in the Amazon is a local land-use decision with global climate consequences)
- Your exam answers should demonstrate awareness of scale — show how local case studies connect to wider patterns
Interdependence
- The natural world and human world are interconnected — changes in one system affect others
- Example: Deforestation → reduced transpiration → less rainfall → soil erosion → river flooding downstream → damage to homes and infrastructure
- Global interdependence — countries depend on each other for trade, resources, and environmental stability
Sustainability
- Meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
- Applies to resource use (energy, water, food), urban development, economic growth, and environmental management
- The tension between economic development and environmental protection is a recurring theme in GCSE Geography
Cause and Effect
- Understanding why things happen and what results from them
- Physical example: convection currents in the mantle (cause) → plate movement → earthquakes and volcanoes (effect)
- Human example: rural-urban migration (cause) → rapid urbanisation → growth of squatter settlements, pressure on services (effect)
Risk and Resilience
- Risk — the probability of a hazard occurring and the potential damage it could cause
- Resilience — the ability of a community or environment to recover from a hazard event
- Development level, governance, planning, and social cohesion all affect resilience
- Risk equation: Risk = Hazard × Vulnerability ÷ Capacity to cope
Making Geographical Connections
The exam rewards students who can make connections between topics. Here are some examples:
Physical-Human Links
- Climate and development: Countries in extreme climates face challenges to agriculture, health, and infrastructure that hinder development
- Natural hazards and urbanisation: Rapid, unplanned urban growth in hazard-prone areas (e.g. informal settlements on floodplains or slopes) increases vulnerability
- Resources and conflict: Competition for water, oil, and minerals can cause or worsen conflict
Local-Global Links
- Carbon cycle: Burning fossil fuels locally contributes to global climate change, which affects weather patterns, sea levels, and ecosystems worldwide
- Trade: A consumer buying cheap clothing in the UK supports (or exploits) garment workers in Bangladesh
- Migration: War in Syria (local/regional) created a refugee crisis affecting Turkey, Europe, and international relations globally
Past-Present-Future Links
- Glaciation: Ice Age processes shaped today's UK landscapes (U-shaped valleys now used for farming, tourism, reservoirs)
- Industrial Revolution: 19th-century industrialisation created the urban patterns, transport networks, and regional inequalities still visible in the UK today
- Climate projections: Current carbon emissions will determine future sea levels, weather patterns, and habitability of coastal areas decades from now
Applying These Concepts in the Exam
When writing extended answers:
1. Identify the relevant concept — is the question about interdependence, sustainability, scale, cause and effect?
2. Use the concept explicitly — name it in your answer ("This demonstrates interdependence because...")
3. Support with evidence — use specific case study facts and figures
4. Consider multiple perspectives — economic, social, environmental, political
5. Show awareness of scale — how does this issue play out locally vs. globally?
6. Evaluate — weigh up the significance, effectiveness, or extent
Exam tip: The highest-mark questions often require you to link topics together. Practise writing answers that explicitly connect different parts of the specification — for example, linking climate change (Paper 1) with resource management (Paper 2) and decision-making (Paper 3).
