Graphical Skills for Geography
Why Graphical Skills Matter
In the AQA GCSE Geography exam, you may be asked to read, interpret, construct, or analyse a wide range of graphs, charts, and maps. These skills appear across both Paper 1 (Physical) and Paper 2 (Human), as well as Paper 3 (Geographical Applications).
Types of Graphs and Charts
Bar Charts and Histograms
- Bar charts — bars of equal width with gaps between them; used for discrete/categorical data (e.g. comparing rainfall in different months, population of different cities)
- Histograms — bars touching with no gaps; used for continuous data grouped into classes (e.g. pebble size distribution); the area of each bar represents frequency
- Compound (stacked) bar charts — bars divided into segments showing components of a total
- Divergent bar charts — bars extending in two directions from a central axis (e.g. population pyramids)
Line Graphs
- Show change over time or continuous data (e.g. temperature through the year, river discharge over time)
- Multiple lines on one graph allow comparison
- Flood hydrographs — show river discharge before, during, and after a storm event. Key features: lag time (time between peak rainfall and peak discharge), rising limb, falling limb, peak discharge
Scatter Graphs
- Plot two variables against each other to show correlation
- Positive correlation — as one variable increases, so does the other (dots slope upward left to right)
- Negative correlation — as one increases, the other decreases (dots slope downward)
- No correlation — no clear pattern in the dots
- Draw a line of best fit through the middle of the data points to identify the trend
- Identify anomalies — points that do not fit the general pattern
Pie Charts
- Show proportions of a total (must add up to 100%)
- To calculate the angle for each segment: (value ÷ total) × 360°
- Useful for: energy mix, land use, employment structure, ethnic composition
Climate Graphs
- Combine a bar chart (monthly precipitation) with a line graph (monthly temperature) on the same axes
- Temperature scale on the left y-axis (°C); precipitation on the right y-axis (mm)
- Used to describe and compare climates of different locations
Reading a climate graph:
- Identify the hottest and coldest months and the temperature range (max − min)
- Identify the wettest and driest months and the total annual rainfall (add all 12 bars)
- Describe the pattern — is rainfall seasonal or evenly distributed? Is there a clear warm/cold season?
- Link to location — equatorial (hot and wet all year), desert (hot and dry), temperate (moderate, seasonal)
Population Pyramids
- Show the age and sex structure of a population
- Males on the left, females on the right; age groups stacked vertically
- Wide base = high birth rate (typical of LICs)
- Narrow base = low birth rate (typical of HICs)
- Bulge in middle = large working-age population (typical of NEEs with falling birth rates)
- Wide top = ageing population (typical of HICs like Japan, Germany)
Choropleth Maps
- Show variations across an area using shading or colours
- Darker shading = higher values; lighter = lower values
- Used for: population density, deprivation levels, rainfall distribution, percentage data
- Advantages: easy to read; show spatial patterns clearly
- Disadvantages: boundaries are arbitrary (the pattern changes at a boundary but the reality may be gradual); hides variation within each area; categories can be misleading
Other Graphical Techniques
- Proportional symbol maps — circles or shapes of different sizes placed on a map to represent quantities (e.g. city populations, earthquake magnitudes)
- Flow line maps — lines of varying width showing movement and volume (e.g. migration, trade, traffic)
- Desire line maps — straight lines showing movement from origin to destination (e.g. where shoppers travel from)
- Isoline maps — lines connecting points of equal value (e.g. contour lines for height, isotherms for temperature, isohyets for rainfall)
- Dot maps — each dot represents a set quantity placed at approximate locations (e.g. one dot = 100 people)
- Radial graphs (rose diagrams/wind roses) — show frequency or magnitude in different compass directions (e.g. wind direction, longshore drift direction)
- Triangular graphs — plot three variables that total 100% (e.g. employment structure: primary/secondary/tertiary)
- Dispersion graphs — show the spread of data along a vertical number line; useful for comparing distributions
Interpreting Photographs
In the exam, you may be asked to interpret ground-level photographs, aerial photographs, or satellite images:
- Identify geographical features (landforms, land use, vegetation, settlement patterns)
- Describe what you can see using geographical terminology
- Use photographs alongside maps to identify locations and describe changes
- Consider the limitations of photographic evidence (angle, season, time of day)
Exam tip: When constructing any graph, always include a title, labelled axes with units, a key (if needed), and use an appropriate scale. When reading graphs, always quote specific figures from the data in your answer.
