What Are Components of Fitness?

Components of fitness are the different physical qualities that contribute to overall fitness. They are divided into two categories: health-related and skill-related components. AQA defines specific components you must learn, along with their definitions and fitness tests.

Health-Related Components of Fitness

These components relate to general health and wellbeing and are important for everyday life as well as sport.

Reliability, Validity, and Test Considerations

When conducting fitness tests, consider:

  • Reliability — the test produces consistent results when repeated under the same conditions. Factors: same equipment, same time of day, same warm-up.
  • Validity — the test actually measures what it claims to measure. For example, BMI has low validity for muscular athletes because it does not distinguish muscle mass from fat.
  • Practicality — cost, time, equipment requirements, and the number of people needed.

Limitations of Fitness Tests

  • BMI does not account for muscle mass (a rugby player could be classified as "overweight" despite low body fat).
  • Bleep test depends on motivation — performers may give up before reaching their true maximum.
  • Most tests only measure one component, so a full fitness profile requires multiple tests.
  • Environmental conditions (temperature, surface, wind) can affect results.

Exam Tips

  • You must be able to name, define, and give a sporting example for every component.
  • Learn the correct fitness test for each component — a very common exam question.
  • Be prepared to justify why a particular component is important for a named sport or position (e.g. "A goalkeeper needs good reaction time to respond to shots on goal").
  • Know the difference between muscular strength (one maximal effort) and muscular endurance (repeated efforts over time) — these are frequently confused.
  • Remember Power = Strength × Speed — this formula is often tested.
