Language and Thought
The relationship between language and thought is a fundamental question in psychology. Do we think in words? Can language shape how we see the world? Two key theories address this.
Piaget's Theory: Thought Drives Language
Jean Piaget argued that thought comes before language — children develop thinking abilities first, and language follows.
- Thought is independent of language — you can think without words
- Language is a tool for expressing thoughts that already exist
- Evidence: babies can solve problems (e.g. object permanence tasks) before they can speak
- Children's language reflects their stage of cognitive development — they can only talk about concepts they understand
The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis: Language Drives Thought
Benjamin Lee Whorf and Edward Sapir proposed that language shapes thought — the words and grammar of your language influence how you think and perceive the world.
Two Versions

Evidence Supporting the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis
Colour perception studies:
- The Dani people of Papua New Guinea have only two colour words (light and dark) — yet research by Heider (1972) found they could still distinguish colours as well as English speakers (who have 11 basic colour terms)
- However, the Pirahã people of the Amazon have limited number words (only "few" and "many") and struggle with exact counting tasks — suggesting language does affect numerical thinking
- Russian speakers have separate words for light blue (goluboy) and dark blue (siniy) and can distinguish between shades of blue faster than English speakers — supporting linguistic relativity
Eskimo words for snow (debated):
- It was claimed that Inuit languages have many more words for snow than English, and that this helps them perceive different types of snow more easily
- This claim has been challenged — English also has many snow-related words (sleet, slush, blizzard, powder)
- However, the broader principle may hold: having more specific vocabulary helps you notice distinctions more easily

The Relationship in Practice
- Most psychologists now accept the weak version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis — language influences thought but does not determine it
- Language and thought interact — they influence each other in both directions
- Having a word for something makes it easier to think about, remember and communicate — but the absence of a word does not make the concept unthinkable
- Example: learning psychological terms like "conformity" or "cognitive dissonance" helps you notice and think about these phenomena more clearly
Exam Tips
- Know the difference between the strong and weak versions of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis
- Be able to compare Piaget (thought first) with Sapir-Whorf (language shapes thought)
- Use cross-cultural colour studies as evidence — they support the weak version
- For AO3: the strong version is too extreme — deaf people and pre-verbal babies can clearly think without language
- Common question: "To what extent does language affect thought?" — argue for the weak version with evidence from both sides
