Prepositions with countries:

• en + feminine country / country starting with vowel: en France, en Espagne, en Italie
• au + masculine country: au Maroc, au Canada, au Portugal
• aux + plural: aux États-Unis

Past holiday:

• L'année dernière, je suis allé(e) en Espagne avec ma famille. On a voyagé en avion et on est resté dans un hôtel au bord de la mer. Il faisait très chaud et on se baignait tous les jours. C'était génial! — Last year, I went to Spain with my family. We travelled by plane and stayed in a hotel by the sea. It was very hot and we swam every day. It was great!

Future holiday:

• Cet été, je vais aller en Grèce avec mes amis. On va loger dans une auberge de jeunesse. J'ai hâte de visiter les sites historiques et de goûter la cuisine locale. — This summer, I'm going to go to Greece with my friends. We're going to stay in a youth hostel. I can't wait to visit historical sites and taste the local food.

Dream holiday:

• Si j'avais assez d'argent, je voyagerais au Japon parce que la culture m'intéresse énormément. Ce serait l'expérience d'une vie. — If I had enough money, I would travel to Japan because the culture interests me enormously. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Exam Tips

• Holidays are perfect for demonstrating three time frames: where you went (passé composé + imperfect), where you go usually (present), where you will/would go (future/conditional).
• Practise weather vocabulary: il faisait beau/chaud/froid, il pleuvait, il y avait du soleil/du vent.
• For role play, you may need to book accommodation, ask about facilities, or make a complaint.
• Know your prepositions with countries — a common error in translation tasks.
