Describing Your Home

  • Ich wohne seit zehn Jahren in diesem Haus. — I have lived in this house for ten years.
  • Unser Haus hat vier Schlafzimmer, zwei Badezimmer und eine große Küche. — Our house has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a big kitchen.
  • Mein Lieblingszimmer ist die Küche, weil die Familie sich dort trifft. — My favourite room is the kitchen because the family meets there.
  • Ich teile mein Zimmer mit meinem Bruder, was manchmal nervig ist. — I share my room with my brother, which is sometimes annoying.
  • Ich hätte gern ein größeres Zimmer mit eigenem Badezimmer. — I would like a bigger room with its own bathroom.

Opinions About Where You Live

  • Ich wohne gern hier, weil es viel zu tun gibt. — I like living here because there is a lot to do.
  • Es gefällt mir nicht, weil es zu wenig für Jugendliche gibt. — I don't like it because there is too little for young people.
  • Die Gegend ist sehr grün und ruhig. — The area is very green and quiet.
  • Es gibt zu viel Verkehr und Lärm. — There is too much traffic and noise.
  • Wenn ich könnte, würde ich in einer Großstadt wie Berlin wohnen. — If I could, I would live in a big city like Berlin.
  • Früher habe ich auf dem Land gewohnt, aber jetzt wohne ich in der Stadt. — I used to live in the countryside, but now I live in the city.
  • In der Zukunft möchte ich ins Ausland umziehen. — In the future I would like to move abroad.

Exam Tips

  • Writing/Speaking: Describe your house/flat, your room, your town — then give opinions and say what you would change. Use conditional: Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich...
  • Listening/Reading: Know places in town for direction-giving and "what is there?" questions.
  • Prepositions of place: in der Stadt, auf dem Land, am Stadtrand, im Norden/Süden/Osten/Westen von...
  • es gibt (there is/are) is essential for this topic: Es gibt ein Kino. Es gibt keine Bushaltestelle.
