Types of Injury in Sport

Injuries in sport can be classified as either acute or chronic:

Acute Injuries

An acute injury occurs suddenly, usually as a result of a specific incident during activity.

Key distinction: A sprain affects a ligament; a strain affects a muscle or tendon. This is one of the most commonly tested definitions.

Chronic (Overuse) Injuries

A chronic injury develops over time due to repeated stress on a body part.

Injury Prevention Strategies

1. Warm-Up and Cool-Down

  • A thorough warm-up increases muscle temperature, flexibility, and blood flow — reducing the risk of strains and sprains.
  • A proper cool-down aids recovery and reduces muscle soreness.

2. Protective Equipment

Wearing the correct protective equipment for the sport significantly reduces injury risk:

3. Appropriate Clothing and Footwear

  • Footwear must be appropriate for the surface and activity (e.g. studded boots for wet grass, non-marking soles for indoor courts).
  • Correct footwear provides grip, support, and cushioning, reducing the risk of slips, ankle sprains, and impact injuries.
  • Clothing should allow free movement and not restrict circulation. Remove jewellery.

4. Rules and Regulations

  • The rules of a sport exist partly to protect participants.
  • Examples: the offside rule in football reduces dangerous collisions; the high-tackle rule in rugby protects the head and neck; weight categories in boxing ensure fair and safer competition.
  • Officials enforce these rules, and penalties discourage dangerous play.

5. Correct Technique

  • Learning and using proper technique reduces the risk of both acute and overuse injuries.
  • Example: using the correct lifting technique in weightlifting protects the spine; learning to fall safely in judo reduces fracture risk.
  • Coaching and supervision are important, especially for beginners.

6. Playing Surface and Environment

  • Check that the playing surface is safe: no potholes, wet patches, broken glass, or loose equipment.
  • Weather conditions can increase risk (e.g. icy pitches, extreme heat causing dehydration and heatstroke).
  • Indoor surfaces should be clean and non-slip.

7. Balanced Competition

  • Matching performers by age, size, ability, or weight reduces the risk of injury from mismatches.
  • This is especially important in contact sports (e.g. rugby, martial arts).

8. Training Load Management

  • Following the principles of training (especially progressive overload and avoiding overtraining) helps prevent chronic injuries.
  • Adequate rest and recovery between sessions allows the body to repair.

RICE Protocol for Acute Injuries

For immediate treatment of soft-tissue injuries (sprains, strains, minor tears), use the RICE method:

Note: Some specifications now reference PRICE (adding P for Protect — protect the injured area from further harm) or other updated protocols, but RICE remains the AQA expectation.

Exam Tips

  • Be precise with definitions: a sprain is a ligament injury, a strain is a muscle/tendon injury.
  • When asked about injury prevention, give at least three different strategies and link each to a specific sport or situation.
  • If asked to explain how a warm-up prevents injury, refer to the physiological effects (e.g. increased muscle temperature, synovial fluid production).
  • Questions about concussion are increasingly common — know the symptoms and the importance of removing a player from the field immediately.
  • For RICE, explain the purpose of each step, not just what it stands for.
