Arousal
Arousal is a state of physical and mental readiness to perform. It exists on a scale from very low (relaxed, drowsy) to very high (extremely excited, anxious).
The level of arousal affects performance — but the relationship is not straightforward. The optimal level of arousal depends on the performer and the task.
Drive Theory
This simple theory suggests that as arousal increases, performance increases in a linear (straight-line) relationship:
Performance = Habit × Drive
- As arousal rises, a performer is more likely to produce their dominant response (the response they perform most often).
- For an expert, the dominant response is usually correct → performance improves.
- For a beginner, the dominant response may be incorrect → performance deteriorates.
Limitation: This theory does not account for the fact that very high arousal can cause performance to decline, even in experts.
Inverted-U Theory
This theory suggests that performance improves with arousal up to an optimal point, after which further increases in arousal cause performance to decline. The graph forms an upside-down U shape.
Key points:
- Low arousal → poor performance (lack of motivation, concentration)
- Moderate arousal → optimal (best) performance — the performer is alert, focused, and in the "zone"
- High arousal → performance drops (anxiety, loss of fine motor control, poor decision-making)
Optimal Arousal Varies by Skill Type

Anxiety in Sport
Anxiety is a negative emotional state associated with feelings of worry, nervousness, and apprehension. It is closely linked to arousal but carries a negative connotation.
Types of Anxiety

Mental Preparation Techniques
These techniques help performers control arousal and anxiety, improve focus, and perform at their best.
1. Imagery (Mental Rehearsal / Visualisation)
Imagery is the process of creating a mental picture of a successful performance. The performer imagines themselves executing a skill perfectly, using as many senses as possible (sight, sound, feel, even smell).
How it works:
- Activates similar neural pathways to those used during actual performance.
- Builds confidence by creating a feeling of familiarity with the situation.
- Helps the performer focus on the correct technique and desired outcome.
- Can be used to rehearse responses to different scenarios (e.g. imagining how to react if trailing in a match).
When to use it:
- Before competition (e.g. a diver visualising the dive on the poolside)
- During breaks in play (e.g. a free-kick taker picturing the ball hitting the back of the net)
- During recovery from injury (maintaining skill familiarity while unable to train physically)
Exam tip: When describing imagery, emphasise that it should be vivid, detailed, and positive — the performer imagines success, not failure.
2. Selective Attention
Selective attention is the ability to focus on the most relevant information while ignoring distractions.
- In a tennis match, the performer focuses on the ball and the opponent's body position, ignoring the crowd noise.
- Improves with experience — expert performers are better at filtering irrelevant information.
- Can be trained through practice in environments with controlled distractions.
3. Positive Self-Talk
- Replacing negative thoughts with positive, encouraging statements.
- Example: instead of "I always miss penalties", the performer tells themselves "I have practised this hundreds of times, I know where I am going to place the ball."
- Builds confidence, reduces cognitive anxiety, and maintains focus.
4. Deep Breathing
- Slow, controlled breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which calms the body.
- Reduces somatic anxiety symptoms (lowering heart rate, relaxing muscles).
- Can be used immediately before performing a closed skill (e.g. before a free throw, a serve, a penalty).
5. Progressive Muscular Relaxation (PMR)
- Involves systematically tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups throughout the body.
- Helps the performer become aware of physical tension and release it.
- Particularly useful for reducing somatic anxiety before or after competition.
Stress Management
Stress occurs when the demands placed on a performer exceed their perceived ability to cope. It can come from:
- Internal sources: self-doubt, pressure to succeed, fear of failure
- External sources: crowd, opponents, importance of the event, coach expectations
Effective performers use the mental preparation techniques above to manage stress and maintain an optimal level of arousal.
Exam Tips
- Know the inverted-U theory in detail — draw and label the graph if asked, and explain what happens at each stage (low, moderate, high arousal).
- Be able to explain why a fine skill requires lower arousal than a gross skill, with a sporting example for each.
- Distinguish between somatic (body) and cognitive (mind) anxiety — use the terms precisely.
- When recommending a mental preparation technique, match it to the type of anxiety (e.g. deep breathing for somatic anxiety; positive self-talk for cognitive anxiety).
- Imagery questions almost always require you to describe the technique and explain why it improves performance — do both.
