What Is Skill?
A skill is a learned ability to bring about a pre-determined result with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy. In simpler terms, a skilled performer can consistently produce the desired outcome efficiently.
Skills in sport are learned, not innate — they develop through practice, feedback, and experience.
Skill Classifications
Skills are placed on continua (scales) between two extremes. A skill is rarely at one end — it sits somewhere along the line.
Basic to Complex

Types of Practice
The way practice is structured affects how effectively a skill is learned.

Stages of Learning
Performers progress through three stages as they learn a new skill:
1. Cognitive Stage (Beginner)
- The performer is new to the skill and must think carefully about every movement.
- Movements are often inconsistent, uncoordinated, and contain many errors.
- Heavy reliance on visual guidance (watching demonstrations) and simple, clear verbal instructions.
- The performer needs to understand the basic movement pattern.
- Example: a beginner learning to serve in tennis may struggle to coordinate the ball toss, swing, and contact point.
2. Associative Stage (Intermediate)
- The performer has grasped the basics and is now refining the skill through practice.
- Movements are more consistent and fluent, but errors still occur.
- The performer begins to detect and correct their own errors (self-awareness improves).
- Feedback becomes more detailed — the coach can focus on finer points of technique.
- Practice should be more varied to develop adaptability.
3. Autonomous Stage (Expert)
- The skill is automatic — the performer does not need to think consciously about the movement.
- Movements are consistently accurate, fluent, and efficient.
- The performer can focus on strategy, tactics, and the wider game rather than technique.
- Errors are rare and the performer can self-correct almost immediately.
- Example: an elite tennis player can serve at high speed while already planning their next shot.
Learning Theories
Input-Process-Output Model
This model explains how the brain processes information to produce skilled movement:
1. Input — information is received from the environment through the senses (sight, hearing, touch, proprioception)
2. Process (decision-making) — the brain interprets the input, selects the appropriate response, and programmes the movement
3. Output — the selected response is carried out as a physical movement
4. Feedback — information about the outcome is received and used to modify future attempts
Information Processing
Performers must process information quickly and accurately. Key factors:
- Selective attention — filtering out irrelevant information and focusing on the most important cues (e.g. watching the ball, not the crowd)
- Reaction time — the time between the stimulus (input) and the start of the response (output)
- Decision-making speed — improves with experience as performers recognise patterns ("reading the game")
Exam Tips
- Be prepared to classify a given skill on multiple continua (e.g. "A rugby tackle is a gross, externally paced, open, complex skill").
- Know the three stages of learning and be able to describe the characteristics of a performer at each stage.
- If asked to recommend a type of practice for a named performer, match the practice type to the skill type and the learner's stage (e.g. part practice for a beginner learning a complex skill).
- The input-process-output model is often examined as a sequence diagram — be able to label each stage and give an example.
- Practise applying these concepts to specific sporting scenarios rather than just memorising definitions.
