The Subjunctive and Complex Structures

These advanced structures separate Grade 5 from Grade 7+ responses. You don't need to master every form — learn key phrases and deploy them strategically.

The Present Subjunctive

Formation

Take the yo form of the present tense, drop the -o, and add opposite endings:

  • -AR verbs → -e, -es, -e, -emos, -éis, -en
  • -ER/-IR verbs → -a, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an

When to Use It

The subjunctive appears after certain triggers:

High-Impact Phrases for GCSE

You do NOT need to produce every subjunctive form. Learn these set phrases:

  • Es importante que... (It's important that...)
  • Espero que... (I hope that...)
  • Quiero que... (I want [someone] to...)
  • Cuando sea mayor... (When I'm older...)
  • Antes de que... (Before...)
  • No creo que... (I don't think that...)
  • Ojalá... (I wish / I hope...)

Si Clauses (If sentences)

The imperfect subjunctive form you need: tuviera, pudiera, fuera, hiciera (from tener, poder, ser/ir, hacer).

Other Complex Structures

Antes de / Después de + Infinitive

  • Antes de salir, desayuno. — Before going out, I have breakfast.
  • Después de terminar los exámenes, voy a relajarme. — After finishing exams, I'm going to relax.

Al + Infinitive (on/upon doing)

  • Al llegar al colegio, vi a mi amigo. — On arriving at school, I saw my friend.

Lo + Adjective (the ... thing)

  • Lo mejor es la comida. — The best thing is the food.
  • Lo más importante es la familia. — The most important thing is family.
  • Lo peor del colegio son los deberes. — The worst thing about school is homework.

Aunque (although)

  • Aunque es difícil, me gusta estudiar español. — Although it's difficult, I like studying Spanish.
  • Aunque llueva, voy a salir. — Even if it rains, I'm going out. (subjunctive — impressive!)

Exam Tips

  • Lo mejor/peor/más importante is the easiest complex structure to use — it works for any topic.
  • Cuando sea mayor is nearly guaranteed to be useful in writing about future plans.
  • You don't need to explain the subjunctive — just use it. Even 2–3 subjunctive phrases across a 150-word task will impress.
  • In speaking, Espero que + subjunctive and Es importante que + subjunctive are safe, versatile phrases.
  • Conditional + si clause (hypothetical) is one of the strongest structures available at GCSE.
