Future Tense and Conditional
Future Tense and Conditional in German
Using future and conditional forms allows you to talk about plans, predictions, and hypothetical situations — essential for reaching the higher grades at GCSE.
The Future Tense (Futur I)
Formation
Use the present tense of werden + infinitive at the end of the clause:
| Pronoun | werden |
|---|---|
| ich | werde |
| du | wirst |
| er/sie/es | wird |
| wir | werden |
| ihr | werdet |
| sie/Sie | werden |
Structure: Subject + werden + ... + infinitive
- Ich werde nächstes Jahr Medizin studieren. — I will study medicine next year.
- Er wird morgen nach Berlin fliegen. — He will fly to Berlin tomorrow.
- Wir werden im Sommer nach Spanien fahren. — We will go to Spain in the summer.
- Sie wird eine gute Note bekommen. — She will get a good grade.
Present Tense as Future
In everyday German, the present tense + a future time expression is often used instead of the formal future:
- Ich fahre morgen nach London. — I'm going to London tomorrow. (present tense, future meaning)
- Nächste Woche habe ich Geburtstag. — Next week is my birthday.
However, for GCSE exams, using werden + infinitive demonstrates your range of tenses and earns higher marks.
Useful Future Time Expressions
| German | English |
|---|---|
| morgen | tomorrow |
| übermorgen | the day after tomorrow |
| nächste Woche | next week |
| nächstes Jahr | next year |
| in der Zukunft | in the future |
| eines Tages | one day |
| bald | soon |
| später | later |
| in fünf Jahren | in five years |
- In der Zukunft werde ich im Ausland arbeiten. — In the future I will work abroad.
- Eines Tages werde ich ein Haus kaufen. — One day I will buy a house.
The Conditional (Konjunktiv II)
The conditional is used for wishes, hypothetical situations, polite requests, and what you would do.
würde + Infinitive
The most common conditional structure at GCSE uses würde (would) + infinitive:
| Pronoun | würde |
|---|---|
| ich | würde |
| du | würdest |
| er/sie/es | würde |
| wir | würden |
| ihr | würdet |
| sie/Sie | würden |
- Ich würde gern nach Deutschland reisen. — I would like to travel to Germany.
- Er würde lieber zu Hause bleiben. — He would rather stay at home.
- Wir würden jeden Tag Sport treiben. — We would do sport every day.
- Was würdest du machen? — What would you do?
Key Verbs with Their Own Conditional Forms
Some common verbs have their own Konjunktiv II forms that are preferred over würde:
| Infinitive | Conditional | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| sein | wäre | would be |
| haben | hätte | would have |
| können | könnte | could |
| müssen | müsste | would have to |
| dürfen | dürfte | would be allowed to |
| sollen | sollte | should |
| wollen | wollte | would want |
| geben | gäbe (es gäbe) | there would be |
- Das wäre toll! — That would be great!
- Ich hätte gern ein Eis. — I would like an ice cream.
- Könntest du mir helfen? — Could you help me?
- Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich um die Welt reisen. — If I were rich, I would travel around the world.
- Es gäbe weniger Umweltverschmutzung. — There would be less pollution.
Conditional Sentences with wenn
The conditional is commonly used in wenn (if) clauses:
Structure: Wenn + subject + ... + conditional verb (end), main clause with würde/wäre/hätte/könnte
- Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich ein neues Handy kaufen. — If I had more money, I would buy a new phone.
- Wenn ich Bundeskanzler wäre, würde ich die Umwelt schützen. — If I were Chancellor, I would protect the environment.
- Wenn es nicht regnen würde, könnten wir draußen spielen. — If it weren't raining, we could play outside.
- Wenn ich besser Deutsch sprechen könnte, würde ich in Deutschland studieren. — If I could speak German better, I would study in Germany.
Note: In the wenn clause, the verb goes to the end (subordinate clause word order).
Combining Tenses for Exam Success
In writing and speaking, demonstrating multiple tenses is key to achieving higher marks. A strong answer covers past, present, and future/conditional:
- Letztes Jahr bin ich nach Frankreich gefahren. (past — perfect)
- Normalerweise fahre ich mit meiner Familie in den Urlaub. (present)
- Nächsten Sommer werden wir nach Italien fliegen. (future)
- Wenn ich könnte, würde ich jedes Jahr reisen. (conditional)
Exam Tips
- Writing: Always include at least one future tense sentence and one conditional sentence to show tense range. Questions about future plans ("Was wirst du in der Zukunft machen?") are very common.
- Speaking: The conditional is perfect for the conversation section — use Ich würde gern... and Wenn ich... könnte/hätte/wäre...
- Higher tier: Use the specific conditional forms (wäre, hätte, könnte) rather than always relying on würde — this shows sophistication.
- Translation: "Would" = würde/wäre/hätte/könnte; "will" = werden + infinitive. Watch for "could" = könnte vs "was able to" = konnte (imperfect).
